Icarus Redeemed

Dreams of flight beckon man to wonder what it would be like to have wings of his own, to use them to fly over land and sea. Yves Rossy continues to advance the science of the jet powered personal wing and redeem the promise of Icarus for man. Here he flies across the English Channel using a jet powered wing on his back.

“…with melting wax and loosened strings
Sunk hapless Icarus on unfaithful wings;
Headlong he rushed through the affrighted air,
With limbs distorted and dishevelled hair;
His scattered plumage danced upon the wave,
And sorrowing Nereids decked his watery grave;
O’er his pale corse their pearly sea-flowers shed,
And strewed with crimson moss his marble bed;
Struck in their coral towers the passing bell,
And wide in ocean tolled his echoing knell. [source]

  1. Darn. He jumped out of plane instead of taking off from the ground, and it looked like a fancy version of a parachute! I was hoping to see something similar to what I described. I want something I can just on like a jacket, go outside, and take-off! Yeah! Now THAT would be sooooo cool. 😉
