The Socialist Phenomenon

Socialism is a system for the production of human misery as old as the hills.

PRAXAGORA:
Compulsory Universal Community Property is what I propose to propose; across-the-board Economic Equality, to fill those fissures that scar our society’s face. No more the division between Rich and Poor. …
…We’ll wear the same clothes, and share the same food. …
…My initial move will be to communalize land, and money, and all other property, personal and real.
BLEPYROS:
But take the landless man who’s invisibly wealthy…because he hides his silver and gold in his pockets. What about him?
PRAXAGORA:
He’ll deposit it all in the Fund. …
…I’ll knock out walls and remodel the City into one big happy household, where all can come and go as they choose. …
…I’m pooling the women, creating a public hoard for the use of every man who wishes to take them to bed and make babies.
BLEPYROS:
A system like this requires a pretty wise father to know his own children.
PRAXAGORA:
But why does he need to? Age is the new criterion: Children will henceforth trace their descent from all men who might have begot them. …
BLEPYROS:
Who’s going to work the land and produce the food?
PRAXAGORA:
The slaves. This leaves you just one civic function: When the shades of night draw on, slip sleekly down to dinner. …
…The State’s not going to stint. Its hand is full and open, its heart is large, it’ll stuff its menfolk free of charge, then issue them torches when dinner’s done and send them out to hunt for fun.

That play fragment comes from Aristophanes’ The Congresswomen, written in 392 B.C. It demonstrates that socialism is not new. Not even close. The tyranny of socialism has been around since the first agricultural societies, since the first city state declared independence from the tyrant king and established its own form of tyranny over citizens, foreigners and slaves alike.

There is more where the play fragment came from. Read The Socialist Phenomenon, by Igor Shafarevich, translated by William Tjalsma, with a forward by Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn.

And if you want a truly modern system, the most radical system of all, try individualism: the classical liberalism of free markets, equal opportunity for all, the acknowledgment of God-given human rights, and representative government. Now that is radical! And it is the most optimistic and hopeful of all methods of organizing human life.

Video: Covering Your Fannie

0bama and the Congressional Dem0crats continue to blame the mortgage meltdown on Republican deregulation, as if Sarbanes-Oxley wasn’t in place. Fact is that SOX is the most intrusive regulatory regime in the free world, and bears sole responsible for driving a massive movement away from US stockmarkets to London and Singapore. If strict regulation was the issue, the US would have it covered with SOX. But SOX didn’t catch Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, the two pseudo-governmental companies at the heart of the mortgage meltdown. Nor did it catch WAMU, Wachovia, Lehman Brothers, or AIG. And who is responsible for what happened at Fannie Mae?

Watch.

Same videographer has a YouTube channel full of good pieces here.

It failed!

The $700 billion crap sandwich was not appetizing to enough Representatives to get them to vote for it. It can’t have helped the crap sandwich’s chances at passage that San Fran Nan wagged her stinkfinger at Republicans to tell them how this was all their fault… as if ACORN, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Jamie Gorelick, Franklin Raines, James Johnson Andrew Cuomo, and ACORN’s lawyer didn’t make this happen. Phone calls, email, faxes, and letters from constituents running at 10:1 against for Democrats and 100:1 for Republicans surely didn’t help either.

At the same time, the Fed has increased its foreign currency swaps to $620 billion.

Expect the Fed window to open a new credit window pretty close to the original $700 billion figure.

The headline says it all. Scary, fascist, and it sure seems to be illegal.

Action Alert: Spread this video everywhere! Viral is where it’s at this year, at least that’s what Obama’s buddies say.

Update: This picture says it all.

Icarus Redeemed

Dreams of flight beckon man to wonder what it would be like to have wings of his own, to use them to fly over land and sea. Yves Rossy continues to advance the science of the jet powered personal wing and redeem the promise of Icarus for man. Here he flies across the English Channel using a jet powered wing on his back.

“…with melting wax and loosened strings
Sunk hapless Icarus on unfaithful wings;
Headlong he rushed through the affrighted air,
With limbs distorted and dishevelled hair;
His scattered plumage danced upon the wave,
And sorrowing Nereids decked his watery grave;
O’er his pale corse their pearly sea-flowers shed,
And strewed with crimson moss his marble bed;
Struck in their coral towers the passing bell,
And wide in ocean tolled his echoing knell. [source]

Don’t Panic: Fix real economic problems

House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia

Image via Wikipedia

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has some excellent ideas for rescuing the economic engine of the United States without sinking $700 billion into failed companies and bad investments on shaky mortgages.

Four reform steps will have capital flowing with no government bureaucracy and no taxpayer burden.

First, suspend the mark-to-market rule which is insanely driving companies to unnecessary bankruptcy. If short selling can be suspended on 799 stocks (an arbitrary number and a warning of the rule by bureaucrats which is coming under the Paulson plan), the mark-to-market rule can be suspended for six months and then replaced with a more accurate three year rolling average mark-to-market.

Second, repeal Sarbanes-Oxley. It failed with Freddy Mac. It failed with Fannie Mae. It failed with Bear Stearns. It failed with Lehman Brothers. It failed with AIG. It is crippling our entrepreneurial economy. I spent three days this week in Silicon Valley. Everyone agreed Sarbanes-Oxley was crippling the economy. One firm told me they would bring more than 20 companies public in the next year if the law was repealed. Its Sarbanes-Oxley’s $3 million per startup annual accounting fee that is keeping these companies private.

Third, match our competitors in China and Singapore by going to a zero capital gains tax. Private capital will flood into Wall Street with zero capital gains and it will come at no cost to the taxpayer. Even if you believe in a static analytical model in which lower capital gains taxes mean lower revenues for the Treasury, a zero capital gains tax costs much less than the Paulson plan. And if you believe in a historic model (as I do), a zero capital gains tax would lead to a dramatic increase in federal revenue through a larger, more competitive and more prosperous economy.

Fourth, immediately pass an “all of the above” energy plan designed to bring home $500 billion of the $700 billion a year we are sending overseas. With that much energy income the American economy would boom and government revenues would grow.

I don’t know enough about the mark to market rule to be able to judge it, but the other three are such incredibly good ideas they should be passed anyway. The only idea I’d add would be to repeal the income tax and go to the fair tax. A flat income tax would be almost as good. Oh, and fix the Social Security and Medicare disasters-in-waiting that will make us nostalgic for the good old days of the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac meltdown.

How do you solve a problem like Maria?

In the comments to an eye-opening blog article by Jake Tapper, “Maria” writes at Sep 18, 2008 8:45:26 AM

Reading this article, and the comments to it, makes me realize just how out of touch is mainstream America with the situation of Hispanics in this country. I’m not talking just about undocumented workers (who some people here like to call “illegal”), but even Hispanic US citizens like myself. We love this country, help it grow, and still are not allowed to be part of it. This needs to change, so that America can be a better place for EVERYONE. McCain, for sure, would do nothing to change that. I believe Obama will at least try.

A Spanish speaking legal immigrant to and citizen of America, whether from Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba or Spain, has the same rights as every other citizen. It is true that immigrants to America, or any other country for that matter, are often mistreated by the native born. It happened in America to the Irish, Germans, Italians, Chinese, Japanese, Africans, Caribbeans and south Asians, and was much worse a hundred years ago than it is now. I make no excuses for bigots, but it is a fact of human nature. Generations of ancestry are no shield against it. The way to become all American is to embrace Americanism and everything that goes with it. Multiculturalism is a dead end. The melting pot, that metaphor for the American motto “e Pluribus, Unum,” is it.

When young Carlos and Lupe are brought up as Americans first, and barely speak Spanish at home and never while at school, then we will know that Hispanics have truly arrived as Americans.

It’s only a matter of time.

Do-Nothing Pelosi Congress Thinks We are all Idiots

What is missing in Pelosi's flim flam bill?

Details missing from flim flam bill

That’s the only reason I can think of that the Democrats and 15 foolish Republicans voted for Pelosi’s Potemkin energy bill that doesn’t actually do much of anything to free up areas for drilling, while adding tons of new taxes and restrictions to prevent energy companies from making a profit. You know, if you prevent companies from making a profit from developing resources they won’t actually develop them.
