Culture War

Canadians are so polite it’s just amazing. For example, the other day Ann Coulter received a letter from a provost at the University of Ottawa warning her to watch her mouth or she might be arrested and thrown in the hoosegow. The interesting part went like this.

Canadian law puts reasonable limits on the freedom of expression. For example, promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges. Outside of the criminal realm, Canadian defamation laws also limit freedom of expression and may differ somewhat from those to which you are accustomed. I therefore ask you, while you are a guest on our campus, to weigh your words with respect and civility in mind.

There is a strong tradition in Canada, including at this university, of restraint, respect and consideration in expressing even provocative and controversial opinions and urge you to respect that Canadian tradition while on our campus. Hopefully, you will understand and agree that what may, at first glance, seem like unnecessary restrictions to freedom of expression do, in fact, lead not only to a more civilized discussion, but to a more meaningful, reasoned and intelligent one as well.

Ann Coulter responded with musings about how she would file a Hate Speech complaint, including in a letter to the Ottawa Citizen:

The provost simply believes and is publicizing his belief that conservatives are more likely to commit hate crimes in their speeches. Not only does this promote hatred against conservatives, but it promotes violence against conservatives. [link]

Whose speech stirred up violence and hatred again? Was it Coulter’s or the provost’s?

Herbert Marcuse’s Progressive Legacy of Political Correctness, Multiculturalism, Hate and Mendacity

The Free Dictionary defines ‘tolerance‘ as follows.

tol·er·ance

1. The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.

That’s what tolerance used to mean, before Orwellian progressives performed their cunning linguistic tricks on it. Now the class-obsessed left has divided tolerance into two classes: partisan (good) and repressive (bad). The dirty secret is that both their meanings are identical and neither one is real tolerance.

The Lament Configuration is a portal to Hell from the Hellraiser movies

Every once in a while we need to remind ourselves that progressive neo-Jacobins, syndicalists, anarchists, revolutionaries, communists and fascists have stolen the name “liberal” and invented the fabulist lie “progressive” for what they do. Nobody likes their real names. Storybook demons don’t like being summoned by their true names either. That is because using their true, or correct, name gives you power over them. For one thing, it does not allow you to be fooled by their deceptions. They, the neo-Jacobins, syndicalists, anarchists, revolutionaries, communists, socialists, progressives, and fascists believe that the state should take goods from one group and give goods to the other group. Yes, that is like a tribal society with eternal warfare between groups. They mistake the fact that some people have more money than others for a class structure, ignoring the truth that those who start poor and work hard end up rich. That is not a classist society. That is an economically and socially mobile society that rewards merit and effort. They are no more liberals than American conservatives are the same as traditional European Conservatives (monarchists who do not believe in free markets and transformational scientific innovation). American conservatives are the original liberals who believe in life, liberty and property, and all the other requirements for individual empowerment and the starvation of overweening state power. Neo-Jacobins et al believe in that overweening state power that crushes people underneath its hobnailed jackboots.

Hellraiser was just a movie. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth was a bad one. But Hell describes a place that Lucifer created for himself, where he lives consumed with envy and self-pity. And Hell on Earth is a fair description of what Lucifer’s most faithful recent disciple would have his followers create.

Saul Alinsky claimed to be a champion of the dispossessed against those who oppressed them. But he dedicated his masterwork to Lucifer, who created a Hell to live within. And so with everything that Alinsky and his disciples, such as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, want to create in the world. They all want to create a Hell on Earth in which they and their Progressive buddies could lord it over the Have Nots while killing off the old Haves. They are at war with everything good, right, and true. And they want to replace everything good with their coercive state that will scourge us of our humanity and make us into perfect, communist robots. David Horowitz wrote a series of posts that covered much of what he said last week when he appeared on the Glenn Beck show.

Here they are:

America opened the Lament Configuration last November 4. Now we are in for it. Go and read Horowitz’s warning.

The Code of Ethics of The Society of Professional Journalists is a flawed document because it holds journalists to inhuman and contradictory standards. No intelligent journalist with an ounce of empathy who learns about the facts of a situation can ever be non-biased and free of attachments to people in the community in the way that the code demands. Can a journalist who receives hard information about the identity of a murderer truly claim to hold no opinion about the murderer’s guilt? Can a journalist who watches corruption take place at a city council meeting fail to draw inferences and conclusions about the corrupt official’s other official actions? Any posture claiming non-bias and non-attachment requires either an extraordinary lack of curiosity, memory, and empathy or wholesale concealment of facts.

Strong claims, indeed. Read on if you wonder whether they can be defended. Before we start, please familiarize yourself with the Code. (more…)

Happy American Independence Day! While you’re manning the grill, playing backyard football, devouring delicious beef and pork products, and watching big explosions in the sky, think about the spark that lit the flame in 1775 and 1776.

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.

The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;
And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.

On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We set to-day a votive stone;
That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee.

(Ralph Waldo Emerson, Concord Hymn)

The shot heard round the world has its echoes today in the TEA PARTY movement, state sovereignty and nullification movements, and even the push for federalism amendments. Likewise the long list of abuses by the British crown against the American Colonies has its echoes in the Democrats’ refusal to read thousand page bills before they are passed, or to allow Republicans to read and debate the bills if they won’t, in Obama’s proliferation of unconstitutional “czar” positions and executive branch organizations without significant legislative oversight, in Obama’s intention to put an organization packed full of people who were convicted of vote fraud in charge of the 2010 Census, in the Democrats’ refusal to protect the country’s borders, in their intentions to nullify the rights to own and manage one’s own property and protect one’s self by force of arms, and in their intention to use the courts to enforce racialist policies under the misleading name of Equal Opportunity. The Democrats are too extreme, too far left, for America. Their bailouts, non-stimulus-stimulus, seizures and nationalizations of key industries, regulatory overreach, and subversion of the press’ role as a watchdog of government are destroying our economy and blinding us to the injury.

Will there be another shot? I am not calling for gunplay, but for a symbolic beginning to the political battle. Will more grassroots TEA Parties do it? Or will it take some great suffering, such as the scourging Sarah Palin has been subjected to since September 2008, to awaken America to the injustice of the Democrats’ plan?

Erick Erickson wonders what will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. What will it take for Americans to rise up in righteous indignation at the rampant abuses of government?

First, when codeine works perfectly to control coughs and colds, classify it as a dangerous drug on the same level as heroin because some people abuse it. When sudafed falls out of patent and goes OTC, spurring the creation of a whole raft of OTC cold products that actually work, discover that people are buying it by the wheelbarrow and illegally turning it into speed, then put such draconian restrictions on it that it’s easier to get a prescription for oxycontin than to buy an OTC cough or cold medicine that works.

Ban bacon fat, lard and suet for frying because they are saturated fats, then ban polyunsaturated fats because they are really dangerous, then ban trans-fats because now they are super dangerous. I’m super serial! Guess what? Now everyone seems to agree that lard and suet are better for you and better for frying than anything else.

Elect an entire political party of lawyers to the legislature who pass such a multiplicity of mutually contradictory laws in the states and nation that nobody ever knows if they are breaking some law but suspects they are. That this forces everybody to consult lawyers for all sorts of things with terrible results for getting the wrong advice is not unintentional.

When the economy tanks and everybody has trouble paying their bills, raise their taxes and punish their employers so that the government can buy more stuff. The people and the companies that employ them and supply all the stuff they need to survive can just “take a haircut.” That is a Pelosi/Reid/Obama/Murtha euphemism for “let the government pick their pockets.”

Take away my right to build on my land because a common beetle lives on it with an unusual little pink dot on its abdomen.

Take away my right to buy worthless swamp and improve it into useful land by dubbing the swamp “wetlands”. Disneyworld could never be built in a swamp outside Orlando these days! It might inconvenience a mosquito with a green stripe.

Take away my ancestral family home for “public needs” and give it to a private developer to build an industrial park and make million$.

Corrupt the press and academia to where they no longer care about facts but only about their preferred man-bites-dog narrative in which we Americans are, inevitably, the bad guys.

Force me by law to put all three of my under-12 children in car booster seats, preventing me from fitting my family of 5 in a car, even in a station wagon. No, I must buy a van or SUV to comply with the damn law, then raise the price of gas to $4 a gallon and accuse me of being a polluter.

Take away my light bulbs and replace them with dim CFLs that spill hazardous mercury all over the carpet when they finally go bad.

Take away my high flow shower head and replace with a water saver that drips water like the Chinese water torture instead of using enough water to make me feel clean.

Take away my 3gal toilet and replace with a 1.6gal toilet I have to flush twice or three times as often. The tiny seat makes my butt go to sleep. And the toilet also clogs up about once a week.

Take away my water softener and leave me with hard water that doesn’t allow soap to suds up in the shower.

Take away my detergent with phosphates and leave my clothes and dishes dirty.

Tax whiskey and tobacco, telephone service, gas, hotel rooms, restaurant food, and electricity to the point where I can’t afford to have fun, talk about my troubles, drive anywhere, travel, eat out, or keep the house under 80 degrees in the summer.

Call American oil companies monopolists and cheats when they make a profit, even though the biggest American company is neither a monopolist nor very big by international standards (The top 20 oil companies, all of which are much, much bigger than Exxon, are state owned or sponsored companies with true monopoly powers).

When gasoline gets too expensive for people to afford, require it to be partly replaced with corn ethanol that reduces gas mileage by 10%, requires a tax subsidy that taxpayers pay for to be profitable, does not reduce the price I pay to fill up my tank, and triples the cost of basic foodstuffs like cornmeal and flour for the whole world.

When the corn ethanol boondoggle proves to be insufficiently catastrophic for the American economy, raise taxes on petroleum companies and further restrict the oilfields that can be drilled in.

Call a godforsaken waste that sits over six months a year in darkness a priceless national treasure and forbid oil drilling there on dry land when there are oil platforms only two miles away in the ocean.

Ban old children’s books because of the miniscule amounts of lead in them. While you’re at it, put the makers of handmade wooden toys out of business by requiring them to perform expensive testing on their products. Do all this with the supposed intention of stopping Chinese factories from selling dangerous toys to us.

Take away my right to give money or time to a political cause according to my desire and ability to give.

Take away a company’s right to deduct the pay of its executives over a million bucks from its taxes, forcing it to use stock options and other gimmicks that only make the payouts bigger and the incentives more perverse.

Take away a company’s right to set its own control and accounting policies and force it to hire two different auditors that micro-manage every aspect of its “finances” down to the configuration of network devices that financial information flows over. What’s next for Sarbanes-Oxley, auditing the electricity that powers them? This has cut the profit of American public companies by 50%, but there is another 50% of profit left for government to steal.

Raise up an entire industry of Attorneys General in the various states who believe their way to the Governor’s office depends on how many businessmen they can frogmarch to jail for losing money or filling out a form the wrong way.

Take away my gun because it’s “semi-auto” and full auto guns are dangerous, when “semi-auto” really means “not auto”.

Claim you aren’t going to grab guns because you value hunting then make common deer-hunting ammunition illegal or tax it by $1 or $2 per round.

Take away my private health insurance, then ration my health care because the nation can’t afford to provide the same health care I used to be able to afford.

Ban conservative talk radio and fox news to keep me from seeing or hearing from anyone with an opinion that isn’t as inane and knee-jerk lefty conformist as a college sophomore’s or Maureen Dowd.

Take away my charcoal grill, gas lawn mower, insecticides and fertilizer so I can’t pollute the air and ground the jet-stream leftists fly above in their private jets.

The same day leftist brownshirt protesters in London actually kill someone by attacking him and preventing the police from saving his life, accuse conservatives who express anger at a self-proclaimed revolutionary communist of being scary, violent fascists who hate free speech.

Sweet Lord when will this insanity end?

Bill Ayers, Obama buddy and neighbor, likely Obama ghostwriter, co-founder of and bomb-maker for the terrorist Weatherman/Weathermen/Weather Underground and author of the charming (not!) revolutionary communist manifesto Prairie Fire, is writing again. He’s at Huffington Post with the rest of the high Q score reprobates, natcherly.

In his first blog at HuffPo, Ayers talks about Obama and education reform. Most of the education reform portion of the article identifies the same problems any conservative education reformer would see with the government monopoly schools. Schools are there to dumb kids down, to turn them into good worker bees who can work in the factories that the government monopoly schools were designed to complement. The factories have been driven out of America by ecowarriors, trial lawyers, and their allies, but the schools have not adjusted. Public Schools are not now and never have been there to teach kids how to think, how to become adults who understand the principles that underlie their wants, and have a plan for their own success and thriving in life. Schools are there to turn kids into factory worker sheeple who drink a sixpack every night while watching the ball games.

As far as that goes Ayers and I agree.

Here is where we do not agree.

Obama is not a monarch — Arne Duncan is not education czar — and we are not his subjects. If we want a foreign policy based on justice, for example, we ought to get busy organizing a robust anti-imperialist peace movement; if we want to end the death penalty we better get smart about changing the dominant narrative concerning crime and punishment. We are not allowed to sit quietly in a democracy awaiting salvation from above. We are all equal, and we all need to speak up and speak out right now.

Ayers talks a good game in most of the article as he identifies the weaknesses in education. But in this paragraph he gives away his game. He is not in favor of teaching kids how to think with ideologically neutral materials. Rather than teaching kids how to use logic and reason to dismantle bad arguments, or how to use empirical methods to test economic and sociological assertions, Ayers intends to use the teachers’ higher status compared to their students to brainwash the students into “changing the dominant narrative” concerning all sorts of things: Private property; human rights; class warfare; not just crime and punishment.

Keep that on your mind as we dig into into Ayers’ past to disinter his hidden goals. Zombie transcribes an interview with Larry Grathwohl, an undercover FBI agent who infiltrated the Weather Underground, in which he relates the gang’s plans for how to carry out their revolution.

I bought up the subject of what’s going to happen after we take over the government. We, we become responsible, then, for administrating, you know, 250 million people.

And there was no answers. No one had given any thought to economics; how are you going to clothe and feed these people.

The only thing that I could get, was that they expected that the Cubans and the North Vietnamese and Chinese and the Russians would all want to occupy different portions of the United States.

They also believed that their immediate responsibility would be to protect against what they called the counter-revolution. And they felt that this counter-revolution could best be guarded against by creating and establishing re-education centers in the southwest, where we would take all the people who needed to be re-educated into the new way of thinking and teach them… how things were going to be.

I asked, well, what’s going to happen to those people that we can’t re-educate; that are die-hard capitalists. And the reply was that they’d have to be eliminated. And when I pursued this further, they estimated that they would have to eliminate 25 million people in these re-education centers. And when I say eliminate, I mean kill. 25 million people.

I want you to imagine sitting in a room with 25 people, most of which have graduate degrees from Columbia and other well known educational centers, and hear them figuring out the logistics for the elimination of 25 million people.

And they were dead serious.”

And they still are. As Zombie demonstrates, Ayers still believes everything now that he believed then. He still anticipates a rebellion against the US government, perhaps after Obama drives the economy further into a ditch. Imagine 10% inflation combined with 15% unemployment, falling house prices, and stagnant wages. People will not have enough money to survive, there will be bankruptcies everywhere, and revolution is a serious and dangerous possibility. Ayers has always intended to be on the front line, a revolutionary vanguard poised to organize the revolution, turn it into a communist coup and a mass slaughter.

In Prairie Fire Ayers stated the first step toward revolutionary communist hegemony is to impose socialism. Socialism has always, everywhere produced misery and violence. This is exactly what revolutionary communists like Ayers like about socialism. It prepares the ground for a revolution they can subvert and take over, to end up as the revolutionary elite, a communist aristocracy ruling a victim nation with guns, hunger, and terror.

SUMMING UP

My problem with Ayers’ ideas for educational reform is that Ayers does not wish to improve education. He likes the idea of brainwashing students instead of educating them. His desired change is to turn the students into a different brand of sheeple: vicious partisans for the new Red army.

It would be a good idea to keep on eye on the elderly but still dangerous Ayers.

Google’s oddball choices of “holiday” logos have reached a new height of surreality. Though they famously almost never memorialize Easter or Columbus Day (the last Easter was in 2000, the last Columbus Day never), they did celebrate the birthdays of Marc Chagall, Diego Velazquez, Walter Gropius, Alexander Graham Bell, and the LEGO brick this year. And every year they celebrate the Persian New Year, Earth Day, and Saint Patrick’s Day. Today, which is almost over, was the birthday of Rene Magritte, famous for his painting of a man in a bowler hat with an apple floating in front of his face.

Apparently, Rene “This is not a Pipe” Magritte is more worthy of a customized Google logo than other birthday boys and girls Doctor John, Coleman Hawkins, Pope Benedict XV, Stan Musial, Francois Voltaire, Earl “the Pearl” Monroe, Harold Ramis, Goldie Hawn, Bjork, Lorna Luft, or Tina Brown. Likewise he is more worthy of note than Franz Josef, the penultimate Emperor of Austria who died on this date in 1916, or the Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

I’m not kidding. And I could go on. But I’ll get back to Magritte.

Magritte was a famous exponent of something called the surreal. In other words it’s something other than real: Fantasy, to use an old fashioned word.

Other Surrealists included Salvador Dali, Andre Breton, and Marcel Duchamp. They intermingled with the Dadaists, who were dedicated to the destruction of aesthetics and their replacement with vulgar, mundane artifacts on the theory that since the subjective impression of artistry and beauty was enough to transport some people into an aesthetic reverie, actual artistic skill was no longer relevant. All that was required of the artist was hype. And that’s where we stand now, with hype as the only thing that matters. Abstract expressionism is the classic example in painting. While 10,000 monkeys typing at 10,000 typewriters might never reproduce Shakespeare, three monkeys with a plentiful supply of paint could reproduce Jackson Pollack. Cut-up novels like the works of William Burroughs are quite simply semi-pornographic stories with minimal characterization with a bit of random rearrangement to make them seem sophisticated. And movies, once the quintessential American art-form, are no longer interesting. They are the money gathering thing that reaps the interest sown by brilliantly produced movie trailers and music videos, which are the new quintessential American art-form. And so it is with much in our society. The hype, the flash, the sizzle sells. But the steak is gristly and overdone. How many times do we have to be disappointed before we give up?

Thanks, Magritte! Thanks for nothing! And to Google, thanks for memorializing one of the gang who killed art and replaced it with Andy Warhol hype.

The United Kingdom has been going to hell in a handbasket through a combination of political correctness run amok plus uniquely virulent Anglo-Saxon self-flagellation (Look to the beam in your own eye before you tend to the splinter in another’s, and all that). At this point Brits need to understand there are beams in “the other’s” eye that need lots of attention. I’d also argue Brits need the restoration of the legal right to self defense on the sceptered isle. By transferring money from those who work (disincentivizing work) to those who refuse to work (encouraging slacking), and punishing law-abiding citizens who defend themselves against violent attackers (demoralizing the law-abiding and encouraging murderous thieves), the UK has become a nation of welfare slackers, second-generation drunks, council flat savages, and Jihadist splopey dopes.

Richard Littlejohn has had enough and lets rip with two (verbal) barrels. Read this to get a taste and then pop over and read the whole thing.

The first time it properly dawned on me that the game was indeed up was about 20 years ago in Blackpool, where I was covering the Labour Party conference.

As I made my way from the Clifton Hotel, opposite the main pier, past Yates’s Wine Lodge towards the Winter Gardens, at approximately 9.30am, I had to step into the road to avoid a family walking four-abreast on the pavement in the direction of the sea front. They were all breakfasting on fish and chips from polystyrene containers, washed down with what I seem to remember was Irn-Bru, in the case of the children, and Special Brew, for the parents. The whole family — mum, dad, son, daughter — was dressed in matching turquoise shell-suits and imitation designer-label trainers. They all had earrings. Each wore a baseball cap.

The father’s cap was distinguished by a plastic dog turd stuck to the peak, beneath a logo which proclaimed: ‘S***head.’

I can remember thinking to myself, as I watched them window-shopping at the pork butcher’s: ‘What chance have these kids got?’

As for the meanings of those odd words in the title of this post, here you go.

Glossary for this post

Pukka
Pukka means ‘authentic’ or ‘first-rate’. Originates from the Hindi word ‘pakka’ meaning ‘substantial’. This word was originally used in the Indian colonies.

2. n. Supporters or playing staff of an opposition football (soccer) team, generally of a local rival.
3. n. Anyone who contributes nothing to society, save for crime, disease and misery.
Splopey Dope
1. n. A suicide/homicide bomber.
2. n. A would-be suicide bomber who blows him- or herself up without causing any other damage.
3. n. Someone who explodes or bursts into flames for foolish or ill-thought-out reasons.
from: Splopey from “exploding” or “explosive;” and dope, a fool or a person addled by intoxicants.

If you haven’t read about this somewhere I’m not surprised. It isn’t in the big media (D-Pravda, Izvestia). A masked gang of queer activists from Bash Back Michigan invaded a church to frighten the children, horrify the adults, deny the first amendment rights of the believers, film the whole thing with the help of a complicit television producer, and (they hoped) to provoke violence against them. From RedState:

Wearing secret-service style ear pieces and microphones they received the “go” from their ringleader and off they went.Prayer had just finished when men and women stood up in pockets across the congregation, on the main floor and in the balcony. “Jesus was gay,” they shouted among other profanities and blasphemies as they rushed the stage. Some forced their way through rows of women and kids to try to hang a profane banner from the balcony while others began tossing fliers into the air. Two women made their way to the pulpit and began to kiss.

Their other props? I’ll let them tell you in their own words… from another of their liberal blogs:

“(A) video camera, a megaphone, noise makers, condoms, glitter by the bucket load, confetti, pink fabric…yeh.”

One couple made their way to the church’s restroom and demonstrated some of the meaningless homosexual sex they had just advocated with condoms and glitter, shouted insults and blasphemy, in the sanctuary of the church.

This gang from Bash Back Michigan conspired to trespass upon and to deny the civil rights of a peaceful church (prohibiting the free exercise of an established religion; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble). They engaged in lewd acts in public, in front of children. They made terroristic threats while masking their faces. Doubtless some of them crossed state lines to do so. And they did all this to “protest” another legal exercise of the first amendment (to petition the government for a redress of grievances), 2000 miles away in California.

Where is the indictment? Where is the outrage? Where is O’Reilly?
