Eliot Spitzer was the king of the humiliating arrest, frog-marching businessmen gone awry out of their offices in cuffs and manacles. His version of morality was legalistic, loud, populist and public. Apparently driven by an uncontrollable urge to humble the proud, his unstinting class warfare against corporations has done much to drive businesses out of New York City.

Now we know something about what drove him. He seems to have transported a high priced call girl across state lines (from New York to Washington DC) to spend a night with him at a cost of $4,000. This is a federal crime because it crossed state lines. One could hardly imagine a standing Democratic Governor would ever be indicted in New York, or that a high ranking Democrat would be indicted in Washington DC. There is a chance he will be indicted for this crime. There are reports he will resign. I believe his political stunts have been toxic to New York’s business community, and New York would be nothing without big business, so I’m glad to see him go.

Public moralist, private … what?
